Suffolk wool

$32.00

Prince Edward County Suffolk wool spun at Wellington Fibre Mill in Eloroa, Ontario and naturally dyed by hand here on our farm. Suffolk is a breed of sheep that's raised for both meat and wool.

This is a rustic type of wool, a bit more scratchy than something like merino but with more structure and bounce which makes is very nice for fair isle colour work and cables. It has a tendency to felt so use this for projects you want to felt or be sure to hand wash in cold water. We recommend using a cold water soap like Eucalan which doesn't need to be rinsed out. It adds a bit of lanolin back to the wool to keep it soft.

fingering weight. 115g.

Each skein is one of a kind. All yarns are treated with a mordant to insure the dyes last. We use alum and sometimes iron as our mordants. Some natural dyes are more long lasting than others. We avoid the more fugitive natural dyes as they tend to fade in the sun quickly or lose their colour with time. All naturally dyed fibres will fade a bit over time so we recommend that you store them out of the sun and hand wash in cold water.
